Step 11 - Oil Pan Baffle

Saturday, August 9th, 2008:

A minor issue that BEC's (Bike-Engined Cars) face is oil starvation. Although sportbikes and sports cars experience similar g-forces when driven aggressively, cornering in a motorcycle will still tend to force oil straight down towards the bottom of the pan. That's due to the fact that motorcycles lean into the turn, whereas cornering in a car will tend to slosh the oil towards the side of the pan. To counter this I purchased a sump baffle from Fluke Motorsport.

To install it I simply hoisted the engine into the air, drained all the oil out and removed the pan.

Here you can see the baffle sitting in the pan. Once oil drains down past these small opening into the very bottom of the pan, it's comparatively difficult for the oil to escape. And since the scavenge pickup is down there beneath the baffle, it should always have a steady supply of oil to suck up and pump back up to the top of the engine.

Here you can see the scavenger pickup right in the center.

I test fit the baffle and bolted it all down. The section to the righthand side has nothing holding it in place. After reading a number of comments from other BEC owners, I found out that this piece could eventually crack and break free if left to flop around. The solution was to drill and tap a hole in the case.

I took a lot of precautions to not get any metal shavings into the engine.

I marked where I wanted the hole drilled and then started it with a punch.

After drilling, I tapped the hole and it was ready to go.

Fluke's baffle also prevents use of the stock oil level sensor. I decided to use part of the stock sensor mount along with a small metal plate I fabbed up. Hopefully it will seal up tight.
